Here's where I got that quote - http://www.aphotoeditor.com/2011/11/21/smiling-is-superficial/ - the comments (mostly photographers) are fascinating. I basically agree with Smith's sentiment about photos of substance, though consider a natural smile to be a prize gem in a portrait collection.
